I’m writing to make you aware that as part of continued transformation across the Core Valley Lines (CVL) in preparation for the South Wales Metro, we’ll be closing several lines over a number of dates throughout August, September and October. We’ll carrying out essential engineering and improvement works during these blocks to allow us to run more frequent services on the network from 2025 and onwards.

During these closures, we’re asking passengers to check before they travel on this webpage: Metro service changes | Transport for Wales (tfw.wales)

The below details are for the closures that will directly impact the lines from Pontypridd to Cardiff Bay. Please visit the above webpage for further information on other closures across the CVL.

Cardiff Queen Street Station Closure

  • On Saturday 25 August, Cardiff Queen Street will be closed for us to carry out essential improvement work.
  • We’ll be running rail replacement bus services from Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay. The rail replacement bus service will be one per hour, with ticket acceptance in place with Cardiff Bus on its Cardiff Bus Baycar number 6 service. Customers are advised to check their journey on Cardiff Bus.
  • Buses will also replace trains from Cardiff Central to Radyr (via Llandaf) and Cardiff Central to Caerphilly/Rhymney.
  • Rail services for Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr will start and finish at Cardiff Central and travel via Ninian Park.

Radyr to Pontypridd, Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil

  • We’ll be closing the lines between Radyr and Treberhert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil for nine days from Saturday 28 September to Sunday 6 October, all day.
  • Originally we scheduled 23 days for this closure, however, this has been changed to 9 days to minimise disruption as much as possible to customers.
  • During this period, train services between Cardiff Central and Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Treherbert will start and terminate at Radyr.
  • For customers needing to travel onwards to Treherbert, Aberdare or Merthyr Tydfil, they will need to change at Radyr where a regular bus replacement service will be in operation stopping at the stations along these lines.
  • A shuttle train service of four trains per hour will run between Cardiff Bay and Cardiff Queen Street on Saturdays and weekdays only. On Sunday 29 September and Sunday 6 October, a shuttle train service will be in operation from Radyr to Cardiff Bay.

We’ll be displaying information posters at stations across the affected lines and our journey checker has been updated to inform passenger purchasing digital tickets.

There are some further closures planned later on in October, for which more details can be found here: Metro service changes | Transport for Wales (tfw.wales) We’ll be sharing reminders of these closures for the public throughout the coming weeks.

Gwaelod y Garth Bus Service

31st July 2024

When Cardiff Council advised the Community Council that the G 1 service provided by Adventure Travel  was ending , we were also told a new service would be commissioned .
Since the end of March there has been no replacement bus service & the Community Council is of the view that Cardiff Council does not understand the impact on residents of the loss of the G 1 service .
In order to gather evidence the Community Council has delivered survey forms to each household &  a letter has been sent seeking the support of each of our Senedd Members .

G1 Bus Service update – Gwaelod-y-Garth

For some months the Community Council has been seeking information from Cardiff Council on the future of the G1 bus service.

Cardiff Council have now told us the service provided by Adventure Travel will cease at the end of March.

Cardiff Council are seeking an alternative and there will be a period when no bus service exists.

Do you know any residents who will be in difficulty without a bus service?

Are you able to help residents who are unable to do their shopping?

*The G1 bus service is operated on behalf of Cardiff Council.
