Hanes Pentyrch History

Chapels

The Baptists, Congregationalists, Calvinists, and Wesleyans had their following in the area . The chapel congregations were nearly all Welsh speaking.

Bronllwyn (Independent) Chapel, Pentyrch, built in 1858. The Pentyrch Village Hall was built on this site in 1976.

The first non-conformist chapel in the area was Capel Taihirion near Rhydlafar, established in 1760. It was called "Philadelphia" by Pentyrch people. By 1829 a new chapel was built and the small group of active members was responsible for establishing a number of chapels in the area.

Penuel Baptist Chapel,  Pentyrch. First built in 1838, it was later enlarged to seat 700 worshippers. Now it is a musical instruments workshop.

Bethlehem (Independent) Chapel,  Gwaelod y Garth. Built in 1832.

Horeb Calvanistic Methodist Chapel, Pentyrch, was completed in 1839 and extended in 1863. Through the Rechabites Society, Horeb led the local campaign for Abstinence. It was converted into a recording studio in 2008.

The English Mission was established in 1895 to provide English language services for the increasing number of non-Welsh speakers who had come to live in the area. It finally closed in 2008.
