Hanes Pentyrch History

Early Christians

Saint Cadoc was born about 500AD and founded the monastery in Llancarfan which had a great influence on Christianity in Glamorgan. Cadoc the Wise (Cadoc Ddoeth) travelled widely in Wales, Ireland and Brittany and when he came to this area he may have found a small village grouped around a well. The inhabitants would have been farming clearings on the Little Garth under the direction of the chieftain living at Llwynda-ddu. Saint Cadoc founded the church in Pentyrch still dedicated to him and the well became known as Ffynnon Catwg and the stream which rises from the well is known as Nant Gwladus, after St Gwladus the mother of St Cadoc.
