The Welsh language was spoken by nearly all the residents of Pentyrch in the 19th century. It was the language of the chapels, and the language of the public houses.
Two hostelries in particular were famous for their bardic jousting - the Colliers Arms on the Garth and the King's Arms in Pentyrch.
