Discovered in the roof above the stable of an old village shop, this exceptional collection of documents describes at first hand, village life in Victorian times. The shopkeeper William Evans had kept countless papers relating to his business, his family and villagers including the vicar, the schoolmaster, the postmaster and many others. In addition to fascinating grocery orders, and invoices from suppliers, there are letters from the children away at school. Severe poverty and affluence are described, but also generosity.
