Council commits to tackling £38.4m budget shortfall
Cardiff Council has revealed it is facing a predicted budget shortfall in 2026/27 of £38.4 million.
The council is now working on a budget plan for next year - which could see some services reduced or stopped completely - to bridge the gap.
The shortfall arises when the money the council receives from Government, combined with council tax income, isn’t enough to pay for the 700-plus services the council delivers to residents.
A report to Cardiff Council’s Cabinet, on Thursday, September 18, outlines the financial pressures the council is currently experiencing due to rising costs and increasing demand for social care, schools and education, roads and parks, alongside multiple other services.
Independent Review Praises Cardiff Council as a ‘Good and Ambitious Council’ with a ‘Can-do and Optimistic’ Culture
An independent peer review has found Cardiff Council is a well-run organisation with strong leadership, clear values, effective teamwork, and robust financial and governance systems.
The review that took place between 8-11 July 2025 also highlighted the Council’s inclusive and positive political and workplace culture and concluded that the organisation is respected by partners, residents, business and stakeholders.
These findings were based on a thorough assessment, including over 300 interviews with councillors, staff, trade unions, businesses, and residents alongside departmental visits and a review of the Council’s documents and policies.
Plan Ahead: Cardiff 10K & Tour of Britain Road Closures
With thousands of runners expected to take part in the Brecon Carreg Cardiff 10K and the final phase of the Lloyds Tour of Britain finishing in Cardiff on Sunday, September 7th, there will be a series of road closures in place to facilitate these events.
With the Cardiff 10K starting at 10am, there will be a rolling road closure in place from 9am until 1pm along the route to facilitate the race, with further road closures in place from 3am until 6pm to prepare for and facilitate the last leg of the Tour of Britain, when Geraint Thomas will be competing in his last professional cycle race.
