Parking Plan to Support a Stronger, Fairer, Greener, and More Accessible City Approved

Cardiff Council’s Cabinet has approved a comprehensive City Parking Plan, a 10-year strategy designed to tackle the city’s parking challenges, support sustainable travel, and improve quality of life for residents and visitors.

The City Parking Plan is a cornerstone of Cardiff’s wider Transport Strategy, aiming to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and make the city’s streets safer and more accessible. Developed following extensive public consultation, the plan will introduce a new framework to manage parking across Cardiff, aligning the Welsh capital with best practices seen in other major UK cities.

£2 million Foyle Foundation legacy gift as RWCMD begins work to transform heritage Old Library

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama has been awarded a £2 million legacy gift from The Foyle Foundation and has received planning permission to continue its reimagining of Cardiff’s Old Library building.

Alongside financial support of £1.2m from Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns fund and the Digarbon loan fund delivered by Salix, this means that all funding has been secured for the first phase of the capital project, which will start at the end of October 2025.

Other funding, which was announced last year, has come from major gifts from Sir Howard and Jennifer Stringer, and an anonymous donor, as well as a grant from the Simon Gibson Charitable Trust. The Old Library project is at the heart of the vision for the College’s future – where the arts meet community and where students’ learning is enhanced by being in a civic, inclusive space. Without their generosity, and the goodwill of the Council, RWCMD would not be able to seize this amazing opportunity to expand its teaching, its community work and its public reach, seeing this building restored, reimagined, and alive with purpose.

Lakeside Primary School joins city-wide effort to champion active travel

Lakeside Primary School is proud to be one of many schools across Cardiff taking action to support active travel during Cycle to School Week 2025 (13–17 October) encouraging families to walk, cycle, or scoot to school.

As part of Cardiff’s commitment to healthier, safer journeys, Lakeside Primary School has signed a city-wide pledge alongside dozens of other schools, promoting sustainable travel options for pupils and families. The initiative is supported by community partnerships and local agencies, including South Wales Police, who are providing high-visibility patrols at the school to ensure safe journeys.

During Cycle to School Week, pupils, parents, and staff at Lakeside have embraced active travel, with special events such as assemblies featuring elite Welsh track cyclist Harvey McNaughton from Beicio Cymru (Cycling Wales), inspiring children to stay active. Parents are also exploring the launch of a Friday Bike Bus - a supervised group ride to encourage regular cycling and maintain momentum throughout the year.
